ROACH and ROACH2 Systems

Digicom Electronics is the sole provider of the ROACH and ROACH2 (Reconfigurable Open Architecture Computing Hardware) systems, making us the only company capable of delivering these specialized high-performance computing solutions. Developed in collaboration with top universities and research labs worldwide, these systems play a vital role in cutting-edge scientific discoveries.
ROACH2 is designed to process baseband data from some of the world’s most powerful radio telescopes. It converts analog signals into digital data and applies advanced digital signal processing techniques to extract valuable insights about our universe. Each system is customized based on specific needs—whether it’s handling massive data transfers at high speeds or selectively filtering and downloading critical information.
Projects like ROACH2, IADC (analog-to-digital conversion boards), and IBoB (interconnect break-out boards) are fully turnkey, meaning we handle everything from design to final production. ROACH itself is a Virtex5-based upgrade to existing CASPER hardware, merging key features from the iBOB and BEE2 platforms into a single, high-performance board.
It retains the CX4/XAUI/10GbE interfaces while combining iBOB’s Z-DOK daughter board interface with BEE2’s high-bandwidth DRAM memory and standalone capabilities. Instead of relying on inter-board FPGA links, ROACH utilizes 10GbE interfaces for all cross-FPGA communications, making it a powerful and versatile tool for high-speed data processing.
At Digicom, we take pride in delivering these complex, high-performance computing solutions to support groundbreaking research in astrophysics, signal processing, and beyond.

ROACH2 was designed as the sequel to ROACH-1 using the new Xilinx Virtex-6 series of FPGAs. It maintains all the aspects that made ROACH-1 a success, but increases the overall performance in terms of processing power, IO throughput and memory bandwidth. It uses the same PowerPC 440EPx present on the ROACH-1 but adds a unified JTAG interface provided through an FTDI FT4232H IC.
