Process Specialist (Internship)

Job Summary

The Process Specialist supports manufacturing engineering and quality assurance by maintaining, programming, and troubleshooting 2D/3D AOI and X-Ray inspection systems. This role balances hands-on electro-mechanical machine maintenance with software parameter optimization to identify assembly defects (e.g., BGA bridging, component misalignment, voiding) before final product shipment.

Key Responsibilities

Equipment Operation & Programming

  • Program Initialization: Create, debug, and fine-tune inspection programs for 2D/3D AOI and X-Ray systems based on CAD data, BOMs, and Gerber files.
  • Defect Verification: Analyze inspection data and X-ray images to accurately distinguish between real manufacturing defects and false calls.
  • First Article Inspection: Execute First Article Inspections (FAI) on new production runs to verify correct component placement and alignment.
  • NPI Support: Assist engineers during New Product Introduction (NPI) by validating optical and radiological inspection recipes.

Machine Maintenance & Calibration

  • Preventative Maintenance (PM): Perform daily, weekly, and monthly PM routines according to supplier specifications (e.g., cleaning lenses, inspecting conveyor belts, checking filters).
  • System Calibration: Calibrate optical cameras, lighting arrays, and X-ray tube sensors to ensure micron-level testing accuracy.
  • Emergency Troubleshooting: Diagnose and repair electro-mechanical, pneumatic, and software failures rapidly to minimize line downtime.
  • Spare Parts Management: Track inventory of critical machine components and consumable parts to guarantee immediate availability.
Qualifications & Requirements
  • Education: High school diploma or technical trade school certification required; an associate degree in Electronics or Mechanical Engineering is highly preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum 1–3 years of hands-on experience in an SMT manufacturing environment working explicitly with AOI or AXI machinery.
  • Technical Knowledge: Proficient in reading electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, and interpretation of IPC-A-610 standards.
  • Physical Capabilities: Ability to stand for long periods on a production floor, lift up to 35 lbs, and pass a color-vision acuity test.
  • Key Soft Skills: Strong analytical problem-solving skills, exceptional attention to detail, and a collaborative team mentality.
